Ben Somers, onderzoeker bij ExpORL, is één van de 8 finalisten van de Vlaamse PhD Cup 2021, een wedstrijd waarin wetenschappers hun jarenlange doctoraatsonderzoek kort en helder proberen uit te leggen. Familiefeesten zijn een nachtmerrie voor wie een hoorapparaat draagt. Met al die mensen die door elkaar praten, heeft de dragen van zo'n toestel het moeilijk om een gesprek te voeren. Ingenieur Simon Geirnaert van ExpORL werkt aan hersengestuurde hoorapparaten. Die detecteren op basis van hersengolven naar welke spreker de gebruiker wil luisteren, versterken dan enkel die persoon en filteren het overige achtergrondlawaai. Hoe dat precies werkt, legt hij in dit filmpje uit.

ExpORL Colleagues Tine Arras, Jan Wouters and Astrid van Wieringen just published their recent study on whether cochlear implantation is beneficial for the receptive and expressive language skills of young children with prelingual single-sided deafness. The study found that early treatment with a cochlear implant is associated with normal grammar development in young children with prelingual single-sided deafness. It makes for a very interesting read, so check it out!

From story listening to EEG-based algorithms, the development of a fast and automatic diagnostic tool for aphasia could be really helpful for individuals who have suffered a stroke and experience difficulties with communication and declining quality of life.

The recent research of Ben Somers at ExPORL forms an important next step towards smart hearing aids. Ben and colleagues have succeeded to measure brain activity directly via a cochlear implant - which in the future could allow for a smart implant to continuously optimize its own settings.
