AESOP 2019

Last week, the second edition of the Auditory EEG Signal Processing (AESoP) symposium took place in Leuven, Belgium. By organizing this conference, ExpORL aims to bridge the gap between the existing auditory neuroscience and engineering conferences.
AESOP 2019 was filled with innovative science on Auditory EEG signal processing. We would like to thank the speakers, poster presenters and all other attendees for their inspiring contributions. We hope you had a pleasant trip home (with some Belgian Chocolate in your suitcase?😉).

Many members of ExpORL contributed to the #AESOP19 conference on auditory EEG signal processing. The pictures below show them in action!

Abstract

The development of word reading skills require the mapping of orthographic (O) information onto phonological (P) and semantic (S) representations. Reading words aloud is inherently an O-P task and is impacted by the consistency of letter-sound correspondences. When letter sound-correspondences do not serve as a reliable cue for correct decoding, readers have to rely on other sources of information such as the semantic imageability or frequency of words. In this study we investigate how individual differences in relying on cues of consistency, imageability and frequency for word reading relate to i) differences in reading ability and ii) differences in the brain network used for reading.

ExpORL @ SNL 2019

ExpORL @ SNL 2019

ExpORL recently travelled to Helsinki, Finland to attend the 11th annual meeting of the Society for the Neurobiology of Language (#SNL2019). It was definitely an exciting program bringing together like-minded researchers and allowing for many stimulating conversations. Safe to say we came back with more knowledge and inspiration for the future!

A highlight of the meeting were the engaging poster sessions, where Maaike Vandermosten, Klara Schevenels, Maria Economou and Lauren Blockmans had the change to talk about their recent work. Lauren was also selected for a flash talk where poster highlights were briefly presented before each session.
