Decoding speech understanding from EEG in a normal hearing and hearing impaired population across the lifespan

Abstract
Recently, studies have shown that the envelope of running speech can be decoded from the brain. As the envelope is a primary cue for speech understanding, measures of neural entrainment of the speech envelope can offer complementary information to behavioural speech audiometry. If we want to apply this method in the clinic, we have to validate our method. Therefore, we investigated the influence of ageing and hearing loss on neural entrainment. We recorded the EEG in normal hearing and hearing impaired subjects of different age groups (18-35 years; 45-85 years) while presenting standardized speech materials and audiobooks.
