Abstract

How many of the sounds in our environment do we actually notice? Why are some of us severely annoyed by sounds in our surrounding while others do not mind? Do we hear the world differently? To address these questions, we use mobile ear-EEG (electroencephalography) and study sound perception where it takes place - in everyday life. With mobile-EEG, we can study cognitive processes that are not accessible to introspection or observation of behaviour beyond the lab.

I will talk about our approach of using long-term ear-EEG to study sound perception during a workday. I will talk about the capabilities and limitations of ear-EEG and present our smartphone-based approach to combine the EEG signal with information about the acoustical environment. I will conclude by discussing the open challenges of moving from well-controlled high-density EEG lab studies to mobile-EEG studies with freely behaving participants.

ExpORL article awarded by the American Physiological Society

ExpORL members Jana Van Canneyt, Tom Francart and Jan Wouters received an award from the American Physiological Society for their recent article published in Journal of Neurophysiology. Congratulations to the authors!

The article discusses the effect of age and hearing loss on human neural processing of the fundamental frequency of the voice (related to voice pitch). The results reveal increased brain activity in listeners with hearing loss to compensate for reduced hearing, aiming to increase speech perception abilities.
