ExpORL @ SNL 2019

ExpORL @ SNL 2019

ExpORL recently travelled to Helsinki, Finland to attend the 11th annual meeting of the Society for the Neurobiology of Language (#SNL2019). It was definitely an exciting program bringing together like-minded researchers and allowing for many stimulating conversations. Safe to say we came back with more knowledge and inspiration for the future!

A highlight of the meeting were the engaging poster sessions, where Maaike Vandermosten, Klara Schevenels, Maria Economou and Lauren Blockmans had the change to talk about their recent work. Lauren was also selected for a flash talk where poster highlights were briefly presented before each session.

ExpORL @ ISAAR 2019

ExpORL @ ISAAR 2019

Last week, the International Symposium on Auditory and Audiological Research (#ISAAR2019) took place in Denmark. It was an inspiring conference about auditory learning in biological and artificial systems. Marlies Gillis of ExpORL had the opportunity to give a talk about "Measuring speech understanding from the EEG using semantic features". In the picture below she is getting ready for her presentation. Well done, Marlies!

Abstract

Optical imaging technologies, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), have the potential to acquire exquisitely high-resolution images of tissue and provide surgeons with a new generation of intra-operative guidance tools. However, their limited image penetration depth of only a few millimetres places most diseases beyond their reach. Our team has focused on the development of miniaturised OCT probes. These include endoscopic probes, intravascular probes and needle probes. In this talk, I will give an introduction to OCT imaging and describe our development of a range of new imaging tools, including specific case studies of clinical applications. Recently, we have integrated our probes into brain biopsy needles to enable safer neurosurgery, and have performed our first experiments in humans. In addition, we have developed the first dual-modality needle probes, capable of simultaneously acquiring OCT and fluorescence images, and showed them to be sufficiently sensitive to detect signal from fluorescently-labelled anti-bodies targeted for specific cells types.

Biography

Prof. Robert McLaughlin is Chair of Biophotonics at the University of Adelaide, Australia; and Managing Director of Miniprobes Pty Ltd. Previously, he was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Oxford. He then left academia for 5 years, pursuing commercial positions in the medical device industry in companies including Siemens Medical Solutions. He was responsible for the development of three commercial products. He returned to academic research in Australia in 2007. He has published 2 book chapters, 76 journal papers and 8 patents, and been awarded over EURO3.5mil in research funding. In 2014, he led the team named WA Innovator of the Year. In 2015, his team were awarded the Australian Innovation Challenge.

Please reply to this email if you are planning to attend the presentation.

ExpORL contributions to CIAP 2019

ExpORL contributions to CIAP 2019

ExpORL had a great time at the Conference on Implantable Auditory Prostheses (CIAP) 2019 at Lake Tahoe in California, USA.
Poster presentations were given by Robin GransierWouter DavidBenjamin DieudonnéBen Somers, and Tine Arras. Additionally, Tom Francart and Jana van Canneyt had the opportunity to give a talk about their research. Look at the pictures below to see our colleagues in action!
#CIAP2019 was an excellent platform to present our work to the scientific community and have interesting discussions. As always, we came home with tons of inspiration and motivation.

Celebrating the PhD degree of Anouk Sangen!

Last week Anouk Schiffelaers-Sangen has successfully obtained her PhD. Her impressive doctoral work is titled: "Single Sided Deafness - consequences for children’s language development & intervention via early cochlear implantation".
Well done, Anouk! We wish you the best in your future adventures.

Abstract deadline for the Auditory EEG Signal Processing (AESoP) symposium is approaching!

Abstract deadline for the Auditory EEG Signal Processing (AESoP) symposium is approaching!

We would like to remind you that the deadline for abstract submission for the Auditory EEG Signal Processing symposium (AESoP) is approaching fast now: 1 august 2019

Don't forget to register soon, places are limited and will probably exhausted before the registration deadline (1 September). Note that registration is separate from abstract submission. We also want to point out that a limited number of rooms is available at the beautiful venue location (Irish college). If you haven't booked a room yet, this is a good time to do so.

We are proud to announce an excellent lineup of invited speakers:   Samira Anderson (University of Maryland, USA), Gopala Krishna Anumanchipalli (University of California, San Fransisco, USA), Behtash Babadi (University of Maryland, USA), Mathieu Bourguignon (BCBL, Spain), Joachim Gross (University of Münster, Germany), Ross Maddox (University of Rochester, USA), Myles Mc Laughlin (KU Leuven, Belgium), Nima Mesgarani (Columbia University, USA) and Sarah Verhulst  (Universiteit Gent, Belgium)

Vacature: Doctoraatstudent
