Abstract

Cochlear implant (CI) is a well-established treatment for severe hearing loss. Currently, cochlear implant surgery comprises a gentle insertion of an electrode array into the cochlea, guided by macroscopic CT scanning and surgical expertise. While this approach is effective, it does not guarantee an atraumatic electrode insertion. Prevention of insertion trauma is crucial for achievement of the optimal hearing outcome in patients, especially in view of the recent trends towards preservation of residual hearing, earlier implantation and a lifetime use of renewing technologies in children. In the past decades, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has proven valuable for real-time, non-invasive, high-resolution, cross-sectional imaging of tissue microstructure in various fields of medicine. There is an upcoming interest for OCT imaging of the cochlea. Our goal is to adapt this technology for non-invasive visualization of the cochlear insertion area and thus to enable an image-guided electrode insertion. We have performed a feasibility study on OCT imaging in surgically accessed and isolated human cochleas. Currently, we are working on standardization of OCT imaging for the human cochlea. Furthermore, we are developing a 3D printed cochlear model for insertion trauma studies, based on micro-CT scans of human temporal bones. We will present the results of our feasibility study and the first prototypes of the cochlear model. In conclusion, we will discuss the planning of the next steps towards OCT-guided insertion.

Tobias Busch obtained his PhD degree. Congratulations!

Tobias Busch obtained his PhD degree. Congratulations!

We would like to congratulate Tobias busch for successfully defending his PhD. His project titled 'Using data logs to capture the auditory environment of children with cochlear implants', was part of the Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Actions ITN 'iCare' and has been a collaboration between Cochlear Europe, Middle East & Africa and Exp ORL - KU Leuven

It was a special honor to have prof. Karen Gordon from Toronto, dr. Tobias Piechowiak from ReSound, and prof. Hannah Keppler from Universiteit Gent attend the defense as external jury members.

Tobias would like to thank everyone who attended and helped to make this a really fantastic evening!

ExpORL @ fTales 2019

Earlier this week several members of Exp ORL - KU Leuven attended the workshop "Neuro-Sense and Sense-Ability" organized by f-Tales (Flanders Training Network Life Sciences). During the workshop a wide variety of topics were covered: from novel neuro-imaging technologies and signal processing to the exciting future of brain-computer interfaces and many more.

Boateng Asamoah and Ben Somers gave flash talks and presented a poster about their research.

Posters were presented by Simon GeirnaertServaas Vandecappelle, Neetha Das, Anastasiya StarovoytAhmad Khatoun, and Eline Verschueren.

Other lab members who attended were Jana Peeters, Marlies Gillis, Jill KriesWouter DavidToivo GlatzLauren BlockmansMaria EconomouGuy FierensShauni van HerckLien DecruyJana van Canneyt and Myles Mc Laughlin.

Second prize in Falling Walls Leuven to Ben Somers

Ben Somers from ExpORL takes second prize at Falling Walls Leuven

On 27 March, 14 researchers participated in Falling Walls Leuven, organised by Doe mij maar wetenschap and presented their innovative and ground-breaking research in 3 minutes to a jury and audience. The second prize from the jury, as well as the audience award, went to our lab member Ben Somers for his research on hearing rehabilitation. Congratulations, Ben!
