ExpORL @ fTales 2019

Earlier this week several members of Exp ORL - KU Leuven attended the workshop "Neuro-Sense and Sense-Ability" organized by f-Tales (Flanders Training Network Life Sciences). During the workshop a wide variety of topics were covered: from novel neuro-imaging technologies and signal processing to the exciting future of brain-computer interfaces and many more.

Boateng Asamoah and Ben Somers gave flash talks and presented a poster about their research.

Posters were presented by Simon Geirnaert, Servaas Vandecappelle, Neetha Das, Anastasiya Starovoyt, Ahmad Khatoun, and Eline Verschueren.

Other lab members who attended were Jana Peeters, Marlies Gillis, Jill Kries, Wouter David, Toivo Glatz, Lauren Blockmans, Maria Economou, Guy Fierens, Shauni van Herck, Lien Decruy, Jana van Canneyt and Myles Mc Laughlin.

Second prize in Falling Walls Leuven to Ben Somers

Ben Somers from ExpORL takes second prize at Falling Walls Leuven

On 27 March, 14 researchers participated in Falling Walls Leuven, organised by Doe mij maar wetenschap and presented their innovative and ground-breaking research in 3 minutes to a jury and audience. The second prize from the jury, as well as the audience award, went to our lab member Ben Somers for his research on hearing rehabilitation. Congratulations, Ben!

SPIN work shop 2019

SPin Workshop 2019

Last week, the Speech in Noise (SPIN) Workshop took place at the University of Ghent, Belgium. It was the 11th time this workshop took place and in accordance, 11 members of our lab participated. Eline Verschueren, Sara Magits, Annelies Devesse and Tilde Van Hirtumpresented posters at the workshop. Sam Denys, Benjamin Dieudonné, Marlies Gillis, Lien Decruy, Michael hofmann, Astrid van Wieringen and Tom Francart attended as well.

We are also very happy to announce that the Colin Cherry Award 2019 was given to Sara Magits for her great poster presentation. Well done, Sara!

Invitation Research Seminar ExpORL, Dept. Neurosciences Efficacy of audiological rehabilitation Sara Magits Research Seminar When? Thursday, 13 december 2018, 14:00 Where? Seminar room HP2 O&N 2 - KU Leuven Herestraat 49 B-3000 Leuven Abstract Communication through spoken language is vital in life, and is jeopardized in the case of hearing impairment (HI). Careful evaluation and treatment of HI is therefore extremely important for alleviating negative consequences of HI (i.e., social isolation, unemployment, depression and/or declining cognitive functions) on long-term health and quality of life. Some persons with HI benefit from audiological rehabilitation (AR) in the clinic, but most people do not and those who do often request more training. Moreover, the efficacy of AR remains debated mostly due to a lack of high-quality research (e.g., randomized controlled clinical trial). We have developed a sustainable, personalized, AR scheme to improve the communication skills of adults with different degrees of HI. This AR scheme is implemented as an application installed on a tablet and it consists of multiple assessment tests, training tasks and counselling tools. Data logging of the different parameters of the application allows for in-depth analysis of the efficacy of the AR scheme. We will present the different components of the AR scheme as well as preliminary results of the prototype evaluation, including feasibility and usability of the application. In conclusion, we will discuss the set-up of the randomized controlled clinical trial where we will evaluate the AR scheme in adults with HI.
