Congratulations Dr. Sam Denys
Another ExpORL member has successfully obtained a doctoral degree. During his Phd, Sam Denys developed, implemented and validated a hearing screening protocol based on speech perception in noise, which is now systematically used to screen the hearing of school-aged children in Belgium. Impressive work with lasting impact, congratulations!

Lien Decruy obtained her PhD, congratulations!
Congratulations to Lien Decruy for obtaining her PhD! Her dissertation was titled: "Neural tracking of the speech envelope: unraveling the effects of listening effort, age and hearing impairment." We would like to thank the jury members for their contributions: Prof. Verhaert and prof. McLaughlin of KU Leuven, prof. Anderson of University of Maryland and Dr. Millman from The University of Manchester. After an impressive defense, we celebrated with a nice reception and a beautiful performance of our own ExpORL band.

ExpORL @ Dag van de Wetenschap!
Our own little ExpORL corner: The brilliant brain between your ears! |
What a memorable day it was for ExpORL at Dag van de Wetenschap!
Dag van de Wetenschap (or Science Day in English) is an initiative of the Flemish government. The event takes place annually and is coordinated by Technopolis and organized in collaboration with the associations of Flemish universities and colleges, scientific institutions and associations, museums and companies.
In this year's DvdW, we got the chance to share our work with the public by means of interactive demos, posters, cool games and movies.
There was something for everyone - from discovering the inner workings of the ear and having a hearing screening, to learning all about language and the brain and exploring all the different methods that we use at Exp ORL - KU Leuven - the day was filled with fun and science.
Everyone had the opportunity to get a hearing screening! |
It was a big success beyond our expectations – a big thank you to all lab members who made this happen and of course to everyone who came by and participated in our activities.
Follow us on different platforms to stay up to date with our research/science (and other) adventures.

Hiring - deep learning
ExpORL is hiring!
We are looking for a new colleague to work on the decoding of brain responses to speech using deep learning. It is a collaborative project with the Center for Processing Speech and Images (PSI) of ESAT. More information and the application tool can be found here: https://www.kuleuven.be/personeel/jobsite/jobs/55477711

Science of Aphasia conference 2019
Science of Aphasia conference 2019
From 23rd to 26th of September, Klara Schevenels and Jill Kries participated in the Science of Aphasia conference in Rome. Next to presenting a poster each, they also presented their research in flash talks and received stimulating feedback. The conference talks were very inspiring, ranging from the most recent advances in unraveling language mechanisms with neurophysiological methods to deciphering the anatomical and functional networks involved in aphasia and amusia as well as investigating semantic theories. Klara and Jill are looking forward to the next edition of the SoA conference in 2020.
